After graduating from Lampeter High School, she attended Indiana State Teachers College, where she graduated with a degree in art and art education. She was thrilled to watch Senator Adlai Stevenson accept the presidential nomination of the party on both occasions.  Stevenson remained her favorite politician throughout her life.
