Listen to Obituary

Alice Donnelly Dickie, 96, of Indiana, Pennsylvania, passed away on Sunday, June 1, 2025, at St. Andrew's Village.

Born on April 26, 1929, in Turtle Creek, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Michael Joyce Donnelly and Rose Keenan Donnelly. She married the love of her life, Donald Bruce Dickie, in 1947.

Alice enjoyed a fulfilling 30-year teaching career, including 28 years at Indiana University of Pennsylvania in the Department of Health and Physical Education. While teaching at IUP, she served as the women's golf coach and also taught community golf classes in partnership with the local recreation department.

A non-traditional student, Alice returned to her studies in the 1960s. With the steadfast love and support of her husband, Don, and their three teenage children, she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Physical Education from Slippery Rock University in 1965 at the age of 36. She went on to receive her Master of Science in the same field from West Virginia University in 1973. In recognition of her academic contributions, she was awarded Professor Emerita status by Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1995.

A gifted athlete from a young age, Alice grew up with older brothers and excelled in many sports. Golf ultimately became her passion. She was a longtime member of the Indiana Country Club. She loved organizing the annual "Dickie Open," a cherished family and friends golf event that brought together players of all ages.

Alice enjoyed competing and traveling with the WPWGA team during the golf season and spent summers participating in women's amateur tournaments across Pennsylvania. These tournaments opened doors to play at some of her favorite courses, including Lancaster Country Club and Merion Golf Club. She was a proud member of the USGA, Women's Golf Association of Western Pennsylvania, and many professional organizations.

Alice is survived by her daughter, Donna D. Putt (Wallace); daughters-in-law, Linda Dickie and Barbara Dickie; grandchildren, Stephanie P. Walker (Erin) of Venetia, PA; Stephen W. Putt (Amber) of Chagrin Falls, OH; Erika Donn Garcia (David) of Lewisburg, PA; Candice Lenkowsky (Adam) of Lawrenceville, NJ; Anthony Latore (Rachael) of Pittsburgh, PA; and Nicole Fennell (Brett) of Indiana, PA.

She is also survived by her great-grandchildren: Ryan and Brady Walker; Lawson and Leighton Putt; Abigail, Gabriella, and Dominik Garcia; Andrew and Jack Lenkowsky; Case and Carter Latore; and Dylan Latore and Lance Fennell.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Donald Bruce Dickie, in 1970; her sons, David Lynn Dickie and Gary Bruce Dickie; and her siblings, Francis Michael Donnelly (Janice), Rose Donnelly Hatzfield (Michael), Joseph Leo Donnelly (Lucy), and Leo James Donnelly (Patricia).
