Barbara Mitchell, 90, formerly of Pittsburgh, passed away peacefully on May 2, 2025, at St. Andrew’s Village, Indiana, PA. She was born December 3, 1934, in Homer City to the late Joseph (ne Giuseppe Miceli) and Irene (Suberata) Mitchell.
Barbara is survived by sisters Rose Pavlik and Joann Hanley, sister-in-law Margaret Mitchell, numerous nieces and nephews, and dear friend Norma Bussey. Barb graduated from Homer City High School in 1953. She worked briefly at Robert Shaw in Indiana, then moved to Pittsburgh, where she was employed by the University of Pittsburgh. There, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree and, later, her Masters degree in social work. After that, Barb worked with Allegheny County Children, Youth, and Families agency, providing support to foster children.
Throughout her life, “Bobby,” as she was fondly known to friends and family, enjoyed traveling and outdoor activities, including hiking, cross-country skiing, and bicycling. Upon retiring, Barb gave generously of her time and resources, volunteering and donating to various charities. She was a long-time member of the former St. Louis Roman Catholic Church in Lucernemines. Barb will be remembered for her kindness, unassuming demeanor, quiet humor, her fondness for animals, and for her devotion to her family. Special thanks to her caregivers and the staff at Hearthlands at St. Andrew’s Village for their loving care.
Preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Sarah Andolina, Mary Randolph, Christine Jefferson, Carmella Mitchell, Irene Page, Betty Rowley, and brother Joseph A. Mitchell.
Visitation will be at Bowser Funeral Home in Homer City on Tuesday, May 6, beginning at 9 a.m. Funeral Mass is at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of the Assumption in Lucernemines, with Fr. John Pavlik officiating. Internment to follow in St. Bernard’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to a cause dear to Barb’s heart, such as one benefiting animals, the environment, breast cancer or diabetes research, or to the Homer Center Alumni Scholarship Fund
