Joseph W. Ondo of Homer City, Pennsylvania, passed away surrounded by the love of his family. He was born on March 5, 1948, in Indiana, Pennsylvania, and was the son of Joseph and Julia (Murengols) Ondo.
Joseph was of the catholic faith. He proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War and was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained during the Battle of Huế. Following his military service, he dedicated many years of service to his community through his work with the United States Postal Service, from which he retired.
He was also a proud member of the Homer City American Legion Post #493, where he served as Senior Vice Commander and Club Stewart, and was honored to serve in the honor guard. He was also a member of the Indiana VFW, Post # 1989. He always enjoyed fellowship with fellow veterans and friends.
Joseph is survived by his wife, Amy (Risinger) Ondo; his children, Eric (Kelly) Ondo and Melissa (Nick) Evans; and his step-son, Larry (CJ) Bennett. He was a proud grandfather to Madison and Jordan Ondo. He is also survived by his siblings, Gloria Kanick, Shirley Wadding, Betty Shankle, and Damian (Gloria) Ondo, as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Kathy Mayausky; and his siblings, Joan Bekina, Judy Buterbaugh, and John Ondo. Joseph will be remembered for his patriotism, dedication to his family, and faithful service to both his country and community. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
Family and friends will be received on Wednesday from 2 to 6 PM at Bowser Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., Homer City. A Blessing service will be held on Thursday at 10:30 AM at the funeral home, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11 AM at Our Lady of the Assumption Parish, Lucernemines Site. Committal services at St. Bernard’s Cemetery, Indiana, PA.
