Sophie (Bindas) Kokolis

September 7, 1923 — November 28, 2015

Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress, my GOD, in whom I trust. Sophie (Bindas) Kokolis went to be with her LORD on Saturday, November 28, 2015. She passed peacefully in her home surrounded by her family. She was born September 7, 1923 in Fulton Run, Pennsylvania. She was the youngest of five children of the late John and Mary (Iwancif) Bindas. Sophie was a devoted, dedicated mother and grandmother, who was deeply loved by her family and everyone whom she met. She always made personal sacrifices in order to be generous with her time and resources for her family. Sophies passion for life centered on her family first. Her love for her family was her greatest quality, as she always made certain her children were well cared for. She loved to garden, cook, bake, can, and crochet. She was an avid reader of the Bible, especially Psalms. Sophie was educated in the Homer City School District and was later employed by the Robert Shaw Fulton Controls Company until her retirement. Sophie is survived by her daughter, Mary Ann Hlusko and her husband Gary of Homer City; her granddaughter, Heather (Hlusko) Gavin and her husband Charles of Richmond, Virginia; her grandson, Michael Kokolis of Delmont, Pennsylvania and her granddaughter, Jennifer (Kokolis) Kincaid of Texas. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Sam, Nicholas, Matthew and Sophia Gavin of Virginia and Alicia and Wesley Kincaid, of Texas. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Nicholas Kokolis; her brothers, Michael and Nicholas Bindas and her sisters, Ann (Bindas) Nymick and Catherine (Bindas) Buchanan. Friends will be received Monday, November 30, 2015 from 6-9 PM at the C. Frederick Bowser Funeral Home, Homer City where a Parastas will be held Monday at 7 PM. A Panachida will be held Tuesday at 9:20 AM at the funeral home followed by a Divine Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 AM at St. Marys Byzantine Catholic Church Homer City with Jerome Botsko, the Celebrant. Interment to follow in the St. Bernard Cemetery, Indiana. The family would like to personally thank Ursula, Janet, Jennifer and Janet W. for their care and compassion of our sweet mother who will be greatly missed by her family.
